We turn to our longtime Ohm Resistance friend and ally, Loïc Beyet and his brothers, making the absolute heaviest, sludgecore, industrial metal. I haven’t often listened to guitar based music in the last few years, and this record hits all the spots that make me bang from this world of sounds. My favorite is “In conflict”, with furious guitar riffs turning over until it grows legs runs, and then gets chopped in half while samples flood the track. The whole record is exactly what it says on the tin – Indus Metal since 98 – and it doesn’t stray too far from the playbook that made me love Hint, early Pitchshifter even. The creepy art by Alexis Horellou is the icing on this cake.

Não temos muita informação em relação ao trabalho dos [P.U.T], além de que se trata de três irmãos que se dividem entre Paris e Bruxelas e que já andam nisto há já bastante tempo, há mais de 21 anos, o que não deixa de ser algo assinalável. Este álbum em que a banda anda à procura de uma editora para o lançar é espelho da sua diversividade e da sua capacidade por nos trazer industrial orgânico, algo que nem sempre acontece. Apesar de algumas experiências à la Godflesh (como na “Possessed”), a banda tem um som bastante original pela forma como conjuga a vertente mais tradicional e a industrial, sendo que o resultado é bem elevado em termos de qualidade.

[P.U.T] are three brothers based in Paris and Brussels who have been terrorising listeners since 1998 with a rather satisfying sludge metal/noise/industrial hybrid. The band have built up an impressive discography with a string of fine EPs, 45’s and compilation appearances. ‘We are (br)others’ is the bands sixth full length album and it’s the sound of a band not resting on their laurels and continuing to explore sonic extremities.
Mixing genres can be a risky business, in the wrong hands a band can come sound too eclectic and find themselves in a musical no man’s land. However when it’s done well the result can be very powerful and that’s the case with this album. [P.U.T] understand that heaviness comes in many forms, it’s not all about bludgeon, sometimes an unsettling ambient sample can be just as crushing as a humongous riff. Opening the album with a distinctly industrial feel is ‘In Control’ is, despite the title, is about someone who’s not. The sound of hammer on metal drags the listener into [P.U.T]’s world. Like being locked in a cell with a serial killer it’s all rather discombobulating as the songs sonic shifts suggest someone who is ill at ease. ‘In Control’ almost breathes as it ululates with a restive rhythm.
Next cut ‘Nothing’ has a killer riff that’s punctuated by a series of electric shocks. A pleasing juxtaposition of organic instrumentation and surgical electronics the band use repetition not so much as to knock on your cranium but to force their way in. ‘In Conflict’ evidences a punk influence: like Motörhead with a speed buzz it fairly races along while some choice samples, taking the place of lyrics, set a confrontational scene. In an album that is always shifting gears ‘Down’ applies the brakes and serves up an almost doom metal feel. Like an anchor tied to a drowning man, it swirls in a downward cycle and drags the listener down to delicious depths. Another change comes with ‘Opressed’ that has a distinctly darkwave vibe: cinematic and evocative it’s akin to a trip through a neon-soaked, futuristic cityscape.
‘I Am Here’ provides a dark, ambient interlude. Like the soundtrack to Alien it’s a disconcerting and disturbing contact with the unknown. Imagine Killing Joke jamming with Godflesh and you’d have something approaching ‘Angry’. [P.U.T] create the feeling of something so vast and immovable and dense as the ocean and the listener feels dwarfed beneath its monolithic enormity. ‘Possessed’ takes another direction and produces a sensation of claustrophobia while ‘Not Your Dog’ has a Southern sludge rock feel very much in the vein of eyehategod. With no hope of redemption ‘Pain’ brings ‘We are (br)others’ to a conclusion. A huge riff constantly scythes through the listener, cutting to the bone. The drums really pound, the bass rumbles and the distorted vocals alternate with some sampled, unsettling medical jargon. It’s not always a comfortable listen but, like examining pain, it’s rewarding.
Every track on this album has a distinct, individual identity yet it holds together well in as a cohesive work. Partly this is due to the aggression with which the songs are delivered and it’s good to see that time hasn’t blunted [P.U.T]’s rage. In whatever genre the band is working in they seem to gravitate to the extreme, whether it be sludge metal, electronica or industrial punk. And fans of any of those genres will find a spiritual home in ‘We are (br)others’.

Szósty album francuskiego [P.U.T] , który ukazał się w tym roku przy współpracy z Cursed Monk Records, okazał się dobrym remedium na poprawę nastroju po zjebanym dniu. Na "We are br(others)", tytuł adekwatny, gdyż w składzie mamy trzech braci, składa się dziesięć kawałków i każdy z nich prezentuje inną twarz trio. W jednym zalewają nas industrialne, maszynowe dźwięki, w innym przytłaczają ciężkie, niemal doom metalowe gitary oraz powolne tempo. Kolejny kawałek dodaje energii swoją punk-rockową motoryką, a jeszcze inny prowadzony jest przez jednostajny beat. Gdzieś tam przewijają się sprzężone, popiskujące gitary i syntezatorowe plamy. Co ciekawe, ta industrialno-rockowo-noise'owo-metalowa mieszanka jest podana w przystępny sposób, czasami nawet przebojowy.

"We are (br)others" is the 6th full length album of the trio and is a compilation of all the above influences and sounds. Doom and dark atmosphere, yet powerful and aggressive in many forms.
The album opens with "In Control", almost pure industrial with some psychedelic rock riffs. "I am Nothing" is going deeper into sludge metal power. Heavy guitars and a feeling of anger.
"In conflict" reveals the punk side of the band, while in "Down" the tempo is lower, getting back to the doom path with some distorted vocals, as in the rest of the album. In "Oppresed" we find more electronic elements than the heavy guitars, which are still here though, with modulated vocals and a catchy beat. "Here" is a low noise industrial part of the album presenting several sounds distorted or not matched together.
"Angry" is a southern sludge metal influenced song with much anger into it but expressed with a stoner spirit. "Possesed" keeps the same ambience with "Angry", not much in the southern form but mostly in the doom, sludge side combined with electronic elements. "Not Your Dog" returns to the stoner rock guitar riffs and with some haunting vocals. "We Are (br)others" is closing with a pure sludge industrial meta song, "Pain", powerful guitars and raw vocals creating some strange energy which hits your mind. Certainly "Pain" is one of my favorites.
Compact, powerful album from [P.U.T]. "We are brothers" combines the power of sludge metal, the noisy industrial tunes, heavy guitars diving even into punk rock riffs with some really dark, doom atmosphere. Make sure you will check it and listen to it!

P.U.T est un groupe que je mettrais sans problème aux cotés de Dementia Simplex pour le coté fou et atypique mais offrant une lecture à plusieurs niveaux, tout en gardant un coté accrocheur, avec leur rythme, leur manière d'amener un univers vraiment étrange mais foutrement riche.(...)

Il est toujours sympa d'aborder la chronique et par conséquent l'univers d'un groupe mystérieux et iconoclaste, à la croisée des chemins. De la diversité, un foisonnement d'influences, c'est exactement ce que vous proposent les trois frangins qui composent [p.u.t] lorsqu'ils se réunissent pour perpétrer un indus-metal sludgy... Des familles, forcément. Concernant ces influences, justement, les plus proches des sphères industrielles, comme Scorn ou Godflesh, ne comptent pas parmi mes artistes de chevet (pour l'instant en tous cas, ça peut évoluer très vite !) mais l'éclectisme forcené des frères Beyet et leur volonté de pratiquer le mélange de genres m'amène également sur des contrées un peu moins exotiques (Will Haven, les Thugs, Pitchshifter, Sleeppers, Girls Against Boys). Dans l'ensemble, on décèle une certaine affection pour les pourvoyeurs d'atmosphères étouffantes, de dissonances, d'expérimentations et de réalisations singulières, loin, très loin des sentiers battus.
Combo aguerri, [P.u.t] sait exactement où il veut y aller et comment il veut y aller, et sait aussi ce à quoi il ne veut pas recourir pour parvenir à ses fins, par exemple des titres racoleurs et sentant la compromission à plein nez. Sa musique se mérite, et il n'est pas impossible qu'il faille s'y reprendre à plusieurs fois pour réellement rentrer dans son pré carré, ce qui n'est absolument pas une mauvaise chose en soi. Tout le monde ne peut pas avoir envie de devenir Sum 41 et de proposer du plug'n play immédiatement fédérateur, mais sans véritable profondeur. D'un autre côté, malgré l'évidente maîtrise des codes et des influences (même si, je le répète, certaines me sont moins familières que d'autres, mais il y a des signes qui ne trompent pas), nul besoin d'avoir écrit une thèse sur l'évolution de la musique industrielle à travers les âges pour conclure que We Are (br)others est un album agréable à écouter dès le premier abord, varié, riche, divertissant. Et bien produit, également. Si vous faites partie de ceux qui sont plus rompus à ce genre d'exercice de style, vous accéderez en quelque sorte au niveau deux de lecture, en décelant telle ou telle référence au fur et à mesure, et surtout en reconnaissant la performance, l'amalgame réussi de celles-ci et la faculté de nos voisins à marquer le disque de leur propre empreinte.
Il faut dire que le patchwork d'émotions est étoffé ici, et que l'entité sait s'y prendre pour vous concocter un parcours mouvementé à travers ses titres : l'inaugural "In Control" vous agrippe d'entrée pour vous restreindre du point de vue respiration et liberté de mouvement (ça commence mal !), son travail de sape est perpétué par le morceau suivant, "Nothing", nanti de ses sonorités dérangeantes, de ses dissonances qui vous vrillent la tête et de son chant peu engageant ("Down", un peu plus tard, agitera à nouveau le drapeau de ce metal indus pour le moins malsain), "In Conflict" vous entraîne sur le terrain d'un metal hybride, imprévisible, ultra-dynamique et barré, "Oppressed" vous fera danser (voix trafiquée, riffs catchy, rythmique entraînante, le coktail est plus que réussi), "Here" vous plongera dans une salle d'attente de laquelle vous ne sortirez que pour être malmené par "Angry" et ses six minutes (volontairement) laborieuses, "Possessed" vous fera bifurquer vers des contrées post-metal, tandis que la wah-wah et les hurlements de "Dog", assortis du futuriste mais inquiétant "Pain", vous raccompagneront vers la sortie, sans pour autant montrer quelque signe rassurant ou déployer quelque amabilité superfétatoire.
[p.u.t] ne cherche pas à vous faciliter la vie. Ce n'est pas Moltonel, Épéda, la Sécu ou votre prof de yoga. Les frères se sont une nouvelle fois (très honnêtement, je n'ai pas encore pu me poser "tranquillement" (?) sur toute leur discographie (Damn), mais quelque chose me dit qu'ils n'en sont pas à leur coup d'essai) réunis pour vous tourmenter (qu'est-ce que vous voulez, c'est leur truc, et ils savent bien le faire) mais aussi vous faire voyager et découvrir des recoins inexplorés, ou en tous cas peu fréquentés. Quelque part, ils vous veulent du bien. L'essentiel est juste de s'en rendre compte et d'accepter que cela ne saute pas aux yeux dès les premières secondes. Vous n'en serez que plus édifié ensuite, et aurez trouvé une nouvelle façon d'égayer (bon, ok, l'expression est peut-être mal choisie) ou en tous cas d'animer vos soirées. Au nom de tous les artistes dont vous n'entendrez jamais parler et qui auraient largement pu vous divertir, ainsi que vous ouvrir à d'autres horizons, donnez au moins une chance à cet album. Au risque de paraître désuet (m'en fous, je suis pas à ça près), c'est pas cher*, et ça peut rapporter gros.

(...) ‘In control’ has an interesting vibe with its experimental distorted jabs of guitar and the lyrics “I have control…. I Control”.. haunting the intro that has a lasting effect along with eerie sounding bells, eventually building up to a totally different feel that took me by surprise at 3:15. By this point that track has won me over with its full, wholesome sound.
‘Possessed’ certainly has the right title with its eclectic rhythm and octave guitars, reminding me of “Iowa” era “Slipknot” but with its own dark twist.
‘Oppressed’ features a distorted bass line that accompanies the more electronic feel of this track with vocals taking a backseat.
Some interesting moments throughout with each track having its own sound, vibe and twist that brings something different to the table each time. A strong album that displays the bands chemistry and longevity.

Let’s jump into this oddly strong world of ass mockery, one that kicks, slaps and rubs it all in your face: your life will never be the same again! Say goodbye to your stable job and all that society had programmed you to do as all will be upside down and burning. But don’t worry the creator of it all is not crazy, it’s all under control; even though maybe it’s half on the edge of sanity, you can clearly hearing [P.U.T] being the stable force that can guide you on your new journey, one that comes down like a brutal fist in which you can hit the table and be totally immune for pain. It’s a gruesome sound, stale and hard like a warning sign that stares at troubles and makes it run out of the way!
You will have nothing to lose over here, only to gain if you are with the dominating sounds of [P.U.T], which is totally annihilating silence and peacefulness with a robotic punk mechanism that is like a brewing volcano ready to dissolve entire cities with its hot lava. The killer sound of mechanic industrialism and a voice that is raw like a fire is for sure one to kick you off the floor and will use your hair as a mop! There is something superbly energetic about it, one that feels like it’s the master that whips you out of your boring life and tells you to go and start a single handed revolution. Perhaps go out and burn ‘something’… be edgy, live life to be alive!
It’s injecting this unforgiving attitude that will make you feel stronger than drinking ten mega energy drinks in one go; your heartbeat might rise and the nerves might be going slightly mental; but once you give in to excellently angry music of [P.U.T] you will make everything kaput that had been bothering or even slightly irritating you for many, many years. With heavy guitars, super distortion, electronic banging bangers that don’t show their kind hearted spirit but ultimately fry yours in order to show no sympathy towards your (fr)enemies. No more mercy, all is about strength and controlled rage and bringing the now or never attitude.
At times the voice of the dominator reminds me a bit of Laidbach, but that makes it all even more awesome! Someone who can perform the sound of music songs in North Korea certainly has a high ‘you can do whatever you want’ feel of strength to it, an attitude that greatly feels explored here on [P.U.T]’s output! Next to destroying and hyping you up to avoid the allergic reactions that boredom can give you, the music also seems to bring some moments in which we could dance collectively. An happening that helps to unite with people of similar minds, freed by [P.U.T] from the shackles of the nine to five life and now coming together for an fury of the grotesque order.
Somehow I think there might be a lot of looting going on, houses might get burned as ‘fans’ dance upon their own destruction! If they rebuild every thing differently in the end is a doubt, but it’s a hell of a lot of fun to destroy, be an uncatchable projectile all hyped up by this unforgiving bringer of psycho energy in which we all collectively could feel like we are (br)others! Or sisters!

P.U.T est un groupe atypique formé en 1998, constitué de 3 frères et qui nous propose ici leur 6è album et dont je n'avais jamais entendu parlé et dont j'ignorais l'existence si Lionel Beyet n'était point venu au contact.
Alors quoi que donc qu'est-ce que ce mystérieux groupe avec cet album? Déjà, d'entrée de jeu, comme ça, à froid, je vous conseille de mettre de coté vos acquis et vos certitudes car ce groupe va vous les balayer d'un coup, surement par un coup de pied balayette suivi d'un high-kick en plein les burettes.

Quoi qu'il en soit, les trois frères m'inspirent le respect, aussi bien de par la longévité du groupe que par la forme qu'il proposent.
Alors oui, c'est vraiment particulier ce que P.U.T propose, avec un coté lent et lourd, poisseux mais qui nous piège lentement, nous enfermant avec eux dans leur univers très personnel m'évoquant parfois Samael (bon, il y a pire quand même non?).
Un autre élément à donner avant de creuser cet objet hors norme, c'est de savoir que ça part dans tous les sens mais pas de façon chaotique.
On est loin mais alors loin de ce que j'écoute habituellement. De prime abord, j'ai eut beaucoup mais alors beaucoup de mal à dépasser les deux premiers titres, très lents, lourds. J'ai néanmoins persisté et en arrivant au troisième titre, j'ai pu enfin plonger dans leur univers. Car oui, le groupe amène lentement son essence. C'est très anxiogène et paradoxalement, c'est très ouvert en offrant un gros coup de pied à nos habitudes sonores.
Si beaucoup d'éléments sont clairement indus et que l'ensemble peut dégager un coté malsain, de machines sans humanité, le groupe amène progressivement des éléments qui enrichissent leur musique et surtout qui donne des éléments de compréhension et de cohésion qui paraissent absents sur les deux premiers titres, très anxiogène et sombre (l'ai-je déjà dit?).
Le groupe a son rythme et au troisième titre ('In conflict'), celui prend un aspect plus rapide (et plus conventionnel bien que ce mot n'ait pas de raison d'être ici) où la synthèse de P.U.T apparaît pleinement et commence alors à nous faire explorer cet univers quelque peu glauque. Et on est plus proche d'une expérience musicale que d'un simple album.
Même si des titres ou des passages sont plus marqués que d'autres au niveau tempo, on reste dans un rythme propre au sludge où l'on s'enfonce bien à mi-cuisse dans un bourbier recelant mille facettes.
Le coté industriel est renforcé par les boucles et samples qu'utilise le groupe, plongeant encore plus l'auditeur dans un monde déshumanisé, un peu à la Terminator (sauf que là, tu as une chance de t'en sortir), permettant de jouer aussi bien sur les rythmes que des ambiances ou des ressentis dans le même temps.
Parfois, on a l'impression de se retrouver à écouter des remix étranges de groupes (Pet Shop Boys, au hasard, sur 'Oppressed', très dérangeant et en même temps accrocheur). Car oui, c'est dérangeant mais dans le même temps, l'utilisation de samples ou les lignes de guitares nous rapprochent de flous repères ou proposent une dimension supplémentaire au titre que l'on ne peut pas évacuer. Quand il n'y a pas un coté presque dansant, inattendu.
Et c'est aussi une des caractéristique de la musique que nous propose les frangins: être à la fois dans un univers sans repères clairs tout en ayant des éléments qui nous parle, nous évoque des choses, à travers ce fameux ressenti propre à chacun. Il est certain que des choses vous parleront alors que moi, ça ne m'a pas marqué.C'est une force du groupe de permettre aux auditeurs de s'approprier une musique difficile d'accès via un ressenti qui varie d'une paire d'oreilles à une autre.
Si un malaise et un coté malsain sont indéniable d'un bout à l'autre de l'album, cela n'empêche pas le groupe d'offrir des bulles d'air ponctuellement, permettant de mieux appréhender cet album. Que ce soit des moments plus aériens ou plus conventionnel aux règles musicales, même si globalement, on est pris dans quelque chose qui martèle le cerveau par le biais de boucles qui se répètent dans les titres, cette répétition n'étant pas là pour être rébarbative mais pour nous accompagner dans la compréhension de leur musique, étant là aussi une répétition qui renvoie au rythme de celui-ci. Bordel, c'est comme si ils aurait voulu mettre le concept du film Inception en musique!
Même si les répétitions sont une marque de fabrique, cela n'enlève pas à leur musique la complexité qu'elle renferme, où par exemple l'aspect punk sera plus dans une conception avec le chant, une mentalité et des éléments musicaux qu'une forme caractéristique nette, explosant vraiment les conventions tout en offrant une cohérence.
Alors oui, P.U.T c'est bizarre, c'est dérangeant, c'est sombre mais putain, ça fait aussi travailler notre cerveau car il peut peut probable que vous vous arrêtiez juste à la musique sans plus de réflexion.

[P.U.T] is een Belgisch trio bestaande uit de broers Beyet: Loïc (gitarist, vocalist en programmeur), Lionel (bassist, vocalist en programmeur) en Nicolast (gitarist en vocalist). Inderdaad: geen drums. Het percussieve gedeelte van de muziek komt elektronisch tot stand. Het is daarom niet vreemd dat de muziek van het drietal een industriële inslag heeft, maar de vanuit Brussel en Parijs opererende band biedt veel meer dan dat.
Dat doet [P.U.T] al sinds 1998, meer dan twintig jaar dus, en sinds de oprichting heeft de band zes albums en een hele rits aan andere uitgaven het licht laten zien. De muziek laat een mengeling horen van sludge- en doom-metal, industrial en punk en een enkele keer horen we een dubstep- of techno-invloed terug, met name als het gaat om de ritmiek. Voor het zesde album, getiteld We are [br]others, vond het trio onderdak bij het Ierse label Cursed Monk Records, dat sinds 2017 aan de weg timmert en waar onlangs al sterke releases verschenen van onder andere Oldd Wvrms en Sloth Hammer.
Sterke troef van de Belgische band is dat men zich niet beperkt tot consolideren of het vervolmaken van een beproefde formule, maar dat ook buiten de kaders wordt getreden, terwijl tegelijkertijd de donkere en heavy kant van de muziek volledig intact blijft. Op het nieuwe album staat die aanpak garant voor tien gevarieerde tracks die stuk voor stuk hun eigen kenmerken hebben. De elektronische component is bij [P.U.T] een belangrijke, maar de gitaren en bas zijn uiteraard dominant aanwezig.
Opener ‘In Control’ opent spannend, een beetje Young Gods-achtig, waarbij een bel klinkt, een dubstep-basritme een zware ondergrond legt en de vocalen voor een crust-randje zorgen. “I keep control”, luidt de repeterende zin en daarvan lijkt in het eerste gedeelte zeker sprake. Die controle gaat na zo’n drie minuten verloren, als de zich steeds herhalende woorden iets maniakaals krijgen. Het is de opmaat voor een tweede gedeelte, waarin een verslavende doom/sludgemetal-riff de boventoon voert en gesproken woord het overneemt van de zang.
‘Nothing’ start met een dansbaar elektronisch ritme, waar piepende tonen aan worden toegevoegd. De combinatie van gillende klanken en een sludgeriff werkt uitstekend. Het negativisme viert, zoals gebruikelijk bij [P.U.T] hoogtij en de woorden “I’m nothing” zingen nog dagenlang na in je hoofd. Met ‘In Conflict’ wordt een andere weg ingeslagen. Het tempo wordt drastisch opgevoerd, de gitaren klinken lichter en er lijkt sprake van echte drums. Het thema is opvallend melodieus, maar het gaat niet ten koste van de heavy punkspirit. Gesamplede stemmen maken het plaatje compleet.
Het toepasselijk getitelde ‘Down’ is zwaar en doomy en is gezegend met een hemels refrein, waarin de zware gitaar- en bastonen vergezeld gaan van synthklanken die zorgen voor een licht symfonisch tintje. Voor het eerst horen we een solerende gitaar, die het gevoel geeft dat de jaren zeventig naar het hier en nu worden getrokken. Met een straffe dansbeat start ‘Oppressed’, waarin de zangstem wordt vervormd. Het dansritme en de rockgitaar gaan een opzwepend verbond aan en krijgen gezelschap van een synthdeun. Het is moeilijk stilzitten op de meest toegankelijke track op het album, waarin het trio steeds lagen toevoegt en zo je oren bij de les houdt.
Het korte ‘Here’ vormt een groot contrast met het voorgaande stuk. Een donker ritme, veel elektronische geluiden, noise en een gesamplede stem vormen de ingrediënten voor het stuk dat je als een interlude zou kunnen beschouwen als het niet zo intrigerend was. Het is wel weer tijd voor een harde gitaarriff en het trio voldoet aan de wens met ‘Angry’, weer een song die de titel eer aandoet. De band benadert in deze track de doom-metal het dichtst, met name in de riff, maar weet daar toch ook weer sludge, crust-punk en elektronica in te verwerken.
De vocalen zijn op het hele album ruw en bars, maar ook afwisselend. Waar nodig worden gesproken woord of gesamplede fragmenten ingezet. Steeds weet het drietal de juiste emotie te vinden. Langste en langzaamste stuk op het album is ‘Possessed’, dat is gestoeld op een traag elektronische ritme, waar een sombere gitaarpartij aan wordt toegevoegd. Nu doet [P.U.T] niet aan majeure stemmingen, maar hier weet men zijn capaciteit om treurnis te verklanken ten volle te benutten. De stemmen die in de muziek zijn verwerkt, geven de muziek een Slint-achtige emotie mee.
De zoveelste killerriff opent ‘Not Your Dog’, terwijl een tweede gitaar daar overheen soleert. Ook hier is de jaren zeventig-hardrock niet ver weg. Verderop wordt het ouderwetse wahwah-pedaal volop gebruikt. [P.U.T] had met het materiaal voor deze song makkelijk in het gehoor liggende stonerrock kunnen maken, maar kiest voor heavyness en hoekigheid, waarvoor hulde. Een start-stopspel is te horen in het afsluitende ‘Pain’, afgewisseld met een unisono riff van bas en gitaar. Het tweede gedeelte is voor elektronica en gesamplede en bewerkte stem, waar bas, drums en gitaar zware accenten onder leggen, terwijl sythklanken er overheen vliegen. Gezongen/geschreeuwd wordt er pas in het laatste gedeelte van de song.
[P.U.T] weet met elementen uit verschillende genres zijn eigen sound te creëren maar ook veel afwisseling te brengen in tien songs die zich duidelijk van elkaar weten te onderscheiden. Tussen die tien songs bevinden zich geen mindere broeders. De sfeer is donker en negatief, maar het trio maakt er geen al te depressieve bedoening van. We are [br]others is een ijzersterk album waarop voor liefhebbers van doom/sludge-metal, industrial en crust-punk veel valt te halen.

Moet ik nu het schaamrood op de wangen krijgen? Dit industrial en sludge metal collectief heeft reeds zes albums, negen maxi singles, één split cd, vier live registraties, een verzamelaar en een 7inch op zijn conto staan, maar tot nu had ik nog nooit van [P.U.T] gehoord. De bezetting op deze ‘We Are (Br)others’ bestaat voor de eerste keer met Lionel, Loïc en Nicolas Beyet uit de drie broers samen. [P.U.T] is actief sinds 1998 en wat het groepsgeluid betreft laveren ze tussen Godflesh, Scorn, Killing Joke, Sonic Youth en Unsane. Het trio houdt inderdaad van zwaar door effecten verstoorde en scherpe gitaarriffs, loodzware basdreunen, malende machinegeluiden, samples, stemvervormers en een spervuur van drumroffels. [P.U.T] weet een grimmige ambiance te creëren. In een niet zo verre toekomst krijgen we vreemde wezens op bezoek. Of is het onze geest die ons parten speelt en weten we niet meer wat en wie we echt zijn. De ‘indringers’ zaaien hoe dan ook twijfel en er ontstaan conflictsituaties. Enkele tracks zijn monumentaal van opzet (‘Possessed’, ‘Nothing’ en ‘Angry’). Het door beats gestuurde ‘Opressed’ heeft een catchy refrein dat zich hardnekkig in je hoofd nestelt en in ‘Not Your Dog’ spelen gierende gitaren voor scherprechter. ‘We Are (Br)others’ is een lekker onbehouwen schijf. Zal dringend eens moeten gaan snuisteren in die mannen hun backcatalogus.

We Are (Br)Others compte dix pistes, allant de 2.53 à 7.20. Quatre d’entre elles dépassent les six minutes.
[P. U. T.] cite pour influences Godflesh, Sonic Youth, Scorn et Unsane. Nous avons pensé à Marilyn Manson.
We Are (Br)Others est en tout cas incontestablement un album de Sludge/Indus Metal, volontiers Doom et Noisy, strident, majoritairement oppressant (Nothing) et mécanique, (l’hynotique Possessed).
Quelques touches plus légères (Opressed) ou Punk avant-gardistes (In Conflict) permettent de reprendre un peu de souffle entre deux passages du rouleau compresseur.
La pochette de l’opus représente deux enfants allongés sur le sol feuillu d’une forêt. Leur peau grisée a l’aspect d’une statue, ils sont couverts d’insectes. Le plus grand protège son frère endormi. Il semble avoir perçu quelque chose qui l’effraie. L’album tiendra les promesses de l’artwork, tout aussi inquiétant que lui et que l’étrange titre de l’album qui souligne à la fois la fraternité et l’altérité.
On doit ce dessin à Alexis Horellou, qui a publié cette année “Lucien et les Mystérieux Phénomènes”, une bande dessinée co-réalisée avec sa complice scénariste Delphine Le Lay; On retrouvera son univers en exposition à Nyoiseau (Centrale 7) du 21/09/2019 au 13/10/2019.

Gdyby się tak zastanowić to trudno byłoby natrafić na nowość od [P.U.T]. Francuska trójca eksperymentalnych muzyków stworzyła coś na kształt buntu maszyn w śnie Trenta Reznora. Byłem w szoku po pierwszym odsłuchu i jestem nadal po kolejnych. To jak intrygująco poprowadzone są kompozycje zasługuje na owacje na stojąco. We Are [Br]others słucha się emocjonująco od początku do końca. Z wyłączeniem uroczego francuskiego akcentu wokalisty, większość rozwiązań słyszałem po raz pierwszym w życiu. Nie wiem jak im się to udało, ale najwidoczniej można i to się opłaca. Chcecie posłuchać zmiksowanych, stylizowanych na wypowiedzi dyktatora, wokali? Proszę bardzo, odpal Possesed. Niewykluczone, że ciekawią Cię futurystyczne rytmy disco. Jeżeli tak, to w takim razie polecam z kolei numer Opressed. Jakiekolwiek z dziesięciu ogniw weźmiecie na warsztat to nie będziecie zawiedzeni, albowiem są to pierścienie niosące na swoich barkach odosobnione doświadczenia.

[P.U.T] is a three-piece band formed in 1998 from Belgium/France. The current line-up of the band features the three brothers Beyet. Lionel Beyet is also a member of Missiles Of October.
The group is set to release their new album aptly entitled "We Are (br)others" on April 20 via Cursed Monk Records.
The 10-track album honors the band's legacy of industrial, sludge, noise and even punk rock music. "We Are (br)others" hits the listener in the bluntest and most disturbing way possible. The exhaustive use of samples and noises, the crushing guitars and the lyrics that a mental institution patient could have written make "We Are (br)others" as extreme as it gets.
Opening track "In Control" starts as a minimalist piece with lots of noise, electronic beats, samples and an agonizing singer. Only halfway through the song the guitar fully kicks in with a devastating riff that increases even more (if that's possible) the chaos and suffocating soundscape of the song.
Second track "Nothing" is a more straight-forward and metal-laden track but still with lots of noise and guitar effects. Speaking of which, the guitar distortion brings to mind sometimes 90s metal band Helmet - the riffs in "Angry" are a prime example of that.
The instrumental tracks "In Conflict" and "Possessed" showcase the trio's varied arsenal, the former is driven by propulsive punk and hardcore rhythms while the latter is a 7-minute mammoth slow-burner industrial piece.
On the bright (or less bleak) side of the album, "Down" has surprisingly melodic keyboard effects buried beneath the band's wall of sound (or noise) and Oppressed's groovy bass lines, danceable rhythm and synthetized vocals could fit in a (good) Muse's song if it wasn't for the heavy guitars and screamings that kick in later.
All in all "We Are (br)others" is a fierce and intense record of a band at the top of their game. Fans of hard-hitting experimental music shouldn't miss it.

Eigentlich ist heute der Tag der Neuveröffentlichungen. Da aber nicht viel Spannendes passiert ist in der letzten Woche, möchte ich mich einer Band widmen, die ich persönlich noch nicht auf dem Schirm hatte.
6 Alben, 8 Maxis und unzählige Beiträge zu Compilations auf dem ganzen Globus haben [P.U.T] schon auf dem Konto. Und so machte mich die Mail von Sänger Lionel Beyet doch sehr neugierig was mich da wohl erwartet.
Bei [P.U.T] handelt es sich um drei Brüder aus Paris und Brüssel die bereits seit 1998 zusammen Musik machen. Ihr Sound ist eine Mischung aus Maschinenklängen und Gitarren. Industrial und Punk zu einem emotionalen, wütenden Sound Wahnsinn.
Einflüsse wie Killing Joke, Sonic Youth und Scorn lassen sich nicht verleugnen. Aber auch Freunde der neueren Combichrist-Scheiben, Ministry und KMFDM dürften hier auf Ihre Kosten kommen
Knarzende Elektrosounds verbinden sich mit düsteren Gitarrenriffen. Kreischende Gitarren zu donnernden Elektronik-Beats. Alles ist machbar und vor allem unvorhersehbar.
Auf der Bühne offenbart die Band ihre voll Kraft, und macht mindestens so viel Lärm wie ein 5 Mann Band. Intensiv, roh, schmutzig und verstörend, eine zerstörerische Maschine in Bewegung.
Wer jetzt neugierig geworden ist, sollte mal bei Bandcamp vorbeischauen und ein Ohr riskieren.

(...) It’s uncomfortably dark industrial that greets us on opener In Control. The horrid noises building in volume all while vocals whisper evil intentions in your ears. The fuzz of the effects is maddening but effective.
“I’m not crazy, I’m in control”
The repeated shouts of this line is followed by surprisingly meaty sludge heaviness. If you made it through the industrial heavy start, this is going to really put a smile on your face. It’s such a fantastic transition and really shows [P.U.T] have something special about them.
Masters of blending furiously dark and heavy industrial with metal, Nothing follows a similar path as the previous track. Although the high-pitched squeals are a little annoying.
It’s all part of [P.U.T]’s constant aim of leaving you guessing as to what might come next. They aim and they succeed as In Conflict’s punky pace once again surprises. In a good way though. There is no shortage of imagination here although it lacks a little consistency.
Keeping things off balance still, Down is a return to the sludge heavy sound of earlier albeit tinged with industrial heaviness. Something that really rears its head on Oppressed, a track that does little to excite.
The latter half of the album is a little more consistent with the excellently crunchiness of Angry. A track with all the power and oomph you’d expect from industrial sludge. One of the best tracks on the album.
It’s followed by Possessed, a similar heavy track but without the groove found in the previous. Here there’s a little more chaos but the repetition of the beat does begin to drag particularly as it’s 7 minutes long.
Finally we have Not Your Dog and its winding guitar riffs that have the ring of classic metal about it and Pain, one final industrial heavy track. Closing out a uniquely interesting album. It has its flaws but [P.U.T] are so in control it’s very hard to not enjoy. (...)

(...) This Belgian band featuring three brothers explores the boundaries between man and machine playing dirty, apocalyptic sludge industrial with punkrock influences. This record contains 10 songs of darkness, despair and hopelessness. The music is sludgy, ritualistic riffing noise, coupled with screaming tortured vocals, sometimes whispered and the clever usage of samples in the song structures. Despite slow and midtempo rolling soundscape, doomy and gloomy, there are couple of faster moments in which punkrock influence can be heard. This music is ideal for drinking, smashing yourself with booze and losing any hope of better tomorrow. You either love sludge/doom or you hate it, there is nothing in between. I love it. Give this one a try if you are a fan of such music. Recommend songs: In Conflict, Possessed, In Control.

ndustrial Punk/Sludge: Die franzöisch-belgische Band [p.u.t] hatte ich bisher auch nicht auf dem Schirm, dabei veröffentlicht das Trio der Beyet-Brüder im April bereits sein sechstes Album („We are (br)others“, 20.4., Cursed Monk Records). Zu hören gibt es halb-elektronischen, Sludge-igen Industrial Punk, der an den fiesen Underground der 90er erinnert und aktuell, im Sound des Hier und Jetzt herrlich anachronistisch, geradezu frisch wirkt. Hoy recomendamos esta inusual banda que se autocaracteriza como “Industrial Sludge Punk Noise”, y si tantas palabras confunden es porque se trata de un grupo muy experimental, que hay que abordar con mente abierta. La industrialización de los sonidos que popularizaron actos como Rammstein o Nine Inch Nails, se combina con métricas disonantes, sonidos electrónicos o simplemente ruidos indistinguibles para generar una atmósfera de inquietud y repulsión, logrando un efecto único.
